@ this space you’ll find commentary about the state of education today. I’ll present the issues, problems and challenges. I’ll show how the system of traditional education is fundamentally flawed, that by it’s very design it is unsuited to optimal human development. It does not prepare children/students for life or for the real world. I will present the words of many others who write about what is needed today, what changes are appropriate to help people grow into the “best version of themselves” that they can be. Isn’t this what “education” should be? And not the preparation of robots or employees.
Like Reagan at the Berlin Wall in 1987 we must demand that the wall be torn down. This wall of traditional education has been built around the souls of people for too long. Let us take it down and use those bricks and stones to build a cathedral to the human soul.
Wow! When I finished reading that, I immediately shouted “Amen!” but only in my head since I’m sitting in Panera and I might scare people.
I agree with your statements and choose to homeschool my children for those reasons and more. But I still feel a responsibility to help change the education system in our country, yet have no idea where to start or who to join. Maybe you have some ideas on that? I look forward to reading more on your blog.
Blessings,
Melanie
HA! Well, I for one wish you’d said it out loud – the folks at Panera would enjoy it and maybe you’d get the chance to then say “sorry… I just read about how to save education in this country…”..oooo, the intrigue.
Glad you enjoyed the post. Yeah, I have plenty of ideas and if you poke around the blog you’ll see that. Happy perusing and don’t be a stranger – there’s work to be done on this front.
Having taught for 20 years, I’ve sadly watched the decline of thinking among our students and the neglect of it in our educational programs. Our school systems were originally created to fuel an industrial society, but those skills are obsolete. How long is it going to take for educational leaders to wake up and start making the changes that will support the society of the present and future?
I am very excited to find your blog! I have been a part of education in one form or another, so I see what the kids go through. So many are just not making it within the traditional arena.
I know Montessori and love it, but I also have been researching other approaches and ideas. One school that caught my attention is the Sudbury Valley School (http://www.sudval.org/). My dream is to open an untraditional school, although many look at me strange when I describe what I see!
In general, parents are fearful to go outside the box while children are begging to get out! I am looking forward to reading all of your previous and future posts!
