Hey! All you teachers in traditional schools… it’s time to get angry and take to the streets.
You’ve “had it up to here”, right? Dealt with all those children from “populations” that are challenged, dealt with district, state and federal programs and plans and directives to tell you how you need to do your job, how to teach and so on. It’s time to give back what you really think. Stand up for yourself and the students in your classrooms. Get out there and demand “different”.
YOU know what’s not working. YOU know that all that teaching to the test, chasing the “prize”, meeting AYP and all the rest is making it impossible for you to REACH children. But if you keep quiet then no one knows. The district’s got more plans for you for next year… ohhhh yeessss. Families and children deserve to hear from you: tell ’em what you know. Tell that it’s not working, that the system is broken. They know it anyway. The longer you remain silent the more you become an accomplice, a co-conspirator, an aider and abettor. Don’t be that.
I’m not talking about making little quips in the staffroom or in a staff meeting. I’m talking about letters to the editor, whistle-blower stuff. Come out on the side of the children. To heck with the unions and the union stiffs who’ll give you a hard time… yeah, it’ll be rough and some hard days. Guess what, the movers of the world aren’t guaranteed safe passage. They move things because things need moving, and because it’s the right thing to do.
Education needs repair. You know it. Please help.
